The Tidal Falls Preserve is found in Hancock, Maine just off the island about 40 minutes from the town of Bar Harbor. Its a way to spend a day away from the crowds of MDI and Acadia and one of the best ways to see the natural sea life the Maine Coast offers. This trip is best planned during low tide, ideally arriving 90 minutes before the low tide hits. You can still enjoy the Tidal Falls at high tide, but many of the sea life will be hidden during this time. Coming before low tide allows for the water to be receding when you arrive and as it does, it exposes a plethora of starfish, sea urchins, hermit crabs and various crab species along the rocks. Seals, osprey, eagles and other animals frequent this unique confluence of waterways that create a waterfall of seawater as the tide forces water up the channel right there at the point. Its a beautiful spot to sit under the trees and watch the day go by, or explore the shoreline with kids for the best starfish you can find!
